WHY NORWICH?

NORWICH AT THE CENTER OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

Bio-medical research is a growth industry in central New York.  The Woods Corner research facilities in Norwich are positioned at the center of a region that is rich with hospital and university-based research programs in bio-technology.  According to the Syracuse based Metropolitan Development association of Syracuse and Central, New York (MDA), the bio-technical sector provides 3,000 jobs in central New York.

Several pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers are clustered in the Syracuse area, fifty miles north of Norwich, including:  Bristol-Myers Squibb; Welch Allyn, a privately-held corporation producing medical devices, products and solutions used for patient assessment and diagnosis; Hanford Pharmaceuticals, a manufacturer specializing in private-labeled and generic antibiotics; and Mercer Milling, a supplier of premium vitamin and trace mineral premixes for the feed industry. X-GEN Pharmaceuticals located to the west, near Elmira, is a privately-held manufacturer of generic drugs.

Norwich was the location of the region’s earliest pharmaceutical research and development efforts, originating with the Norwich Pharmacal Company, founded in 1890. Through several acquisitions over the years, Procter & Gamble Company acquired Morton-Norwich’s pharmaceutical operations in 1982, which ten yeas later became a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, becoming an integral part of P&G’s pharmaceutical research and development efforts in 1992.

Norwich Pharmaceuticals, Inc., known as NPI, is the second company to emerge from the corporate base begun over a century ago in Norwich, and is one of the Chenango County’s larger employers. NPI is a full-service, outsourcing provider of prescription and over the counter pharmaceuticals .Further information on NPI can be found at the company’s we site, www.norwichpharma.com.
