WHY NORWICH?

HOSPITAL BASED RESEARCH

In addition to the university-based programs, a number of the hospitals in the central New York region are teaching hospitals with integral research programs in the life sciences. These include Bassett Healthcare, sixty miles to the east in Cooperstown, which had early involvement in the field of transplantation, and United Health Services in Binghamton, a center for clinical trials. Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich is a member of the UHS healthcare system.

In Syracuse, St. Joseph’s Hospital offers clinical educational opportunities in family practice medicine and in several allied health professions. The State University of New York Upstate Medical University offers both a medical school and the College of Health Professionals. The University Hospital of the State University of New York provides clinical education for the students and offers research in clinical trials.

The Central New York Biotechnical Research Center also located in Syracuse is a public/private partnership of the SUNY Upstate Medical University, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, the Syracuse VA Medical Center, the Metropolitan Development Association, and several corporations in the biotechnical sector.  Initial funding for the center was provided by the State of New York and its mission-to further facility development, education, research and corporate participation in biotechnology- has the support of the State’s newly designated governor.
